Sunflower Oil, Ideal on Dry Hair!

A vegetable oil with multiple benefits

Sunflower oil has a light texture and is very suitable for dry hair . Indeed, the oil is rich in:

  • Vitamin E.
  • Oleic acid.
  • Linoleic acid.
  • Sesamol.

Vitamin E and sesamol (sesame oil), are known for their benefits on hair health.

They are both antioxidants and can help neutralize free radicals that damage the entire hair.

Sunflower oil also contains oleic acid, helping to fight against brittle hair. Its anti-inflammatory properties can help calm dandruff and relieve itchy scalp.

Two refined oils

The end result is a light-coloured oil with a neutral taste. This refining process is often used for many oils:

  • Sunflower oil.
  • Soya oil.
  • Coconut oil.
  • Grape seed oil.
  • Pure olive oil.
  • Extra light olive oil.

Each vegetable oil is made up of a different amount of monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and saturated fats .

It’s not that easy to compare, because each type of oil has different varieties: high oleic, regular, organic, non-GMO, etc.

Sunflower Oil, high in oleic acid

Sunflower has a high oleic acid content. It’s about 75-85% monounsaturated fat , while the rest is mostly polyunsaturated fat and some saturated fat.

Know that monounsaturated fats represent “healthy” fats, as you can find in avocado and olive oil for example.

In other words, to achieve hair care with healthy ingredients, you need to choose an oil high in monounsaturated fats.

Rapeseed oil, on the other hand, contains about 50 to 60% monounsaturated fat ; a much lower content compared to sunflower oil.

This is because regular rapeseed oil is often made with GMO seeds and an expelled solvent.

Although this does not play into the composition of fats, these elements must be taken into account to know the overall quality of an oil.

GMO or non-GMO?

Sunflower oil is naturally non-GMO. This means that there are no genetically modified versions of sunflower oil on the market. This makes it a pure oil with undeniable benefits.

Rapeseed oil is available in genetically modified and non-GMO versions. Canola plants are one of the main genetically modified plants.

Around 90% of rapeseed oil on the market is a genetically modified product.

How to use sunflower oil on hair?

There are several ways to use sunflower oil for hair. It depends on your needs.

If you have other oils at home, you can mix several for complete hair care.

Many products you find in stores, including shampoos, hair masks, and leave-in treatments, contain sunflower oil.

Here are 4 ways to incorporate sunflower oil into your hair routine.

1. Scalp Treatment

Take a spoonful of sunflower oil and massage it directly into your scalp. You can do this on damp hair or dry hair.

Then, distribute the oil with a wide-tooth comb over your entire mane; you have to comb from root to tip .

Wrap your hair in a warm towel, and leave on for at least 30 minutes. Then proceed to the mild shampoo, and do your usual hair care.

2. Hair mask

You can make a great DIY hair mask using half an avocado or banana (or both if needed), honey, coconut or olive oil, and sunflower oil.

Remember to mix your ingredients well to obtain a homogeneous mixture.

Spread it all over your hair, emphasizing the roots and ends. Leave your mask on for about 25 minutes before washing.

3. Reduce frizz

֤ Spread a dab of sunflower oil on your hands, then apply it wherever you see frizz.

4. Conditioner

For a richer conditioner, you can add a small amount of sunflower oil to your existing conditioner.

Apply and rinse normally. If you find your hair is still oily, you may need to rinse twice.

Tips before using sunflower oil

If you are allergic to sunflower seeds, you should avoid the oil.

If you use too much or don’t rinse thoroughly, your hair may feel a little greasy, which just means it needs to be rinsed again. A complete rinse with lukewarm water eliminates the surplus.

Important : Avoid applying heat to your hair after applying a lot of oil, as this can heat up and burn the hair fiber. If this is your first time using the oil, I recommend testing a small amount on your skin before applying it all over your scalp.
